When the conflict intensified in 2006, the Vaharai DS Division, Batticaloa District was one aggressively fought-over territory. During this period of relentless fighting, over 70,000 persons were displaced. By January 2007, Vaharai DS Division was under government-control, and resettlement of the area commenced the following month.
Together with UN Habitat, the Solidar consortium is providing beneficiaries with the opportunity to earn income while completing construction of their new housing.
The Solidar consortium is providing nutritional security and horticultural training through a school gardening scheme in a partnership with Rainforest Rescue International.
To further assist beneficiaries affected by the conflict and the tsunami in Ampara District a second project aimed at restoring incomes through livelihood training and financial support is also running.
